The environmental cost of life online
computers | energy | environment | social networking
Further to my previous blogi about some fellow (with what seems an unending amount of spare time on his hands) who has mapped the flows on his energy through social networks.....its also worth considering the flows of electrical energy...read Bill Thompsons's consideration of the debate over energy saving pixels and avatars' carbon foot-print here

folly carbon footprint
I recently entered data to calculate folly's carbon footprint via the Carbon Trust website.
Admittedly this was a pretty crude analysis but our current Kwh energy consumption was somewhere in the region of 8500Kwh annual electricity consumption. This will mostly be driven by IT equipment and lights.
You can look up the CO2 impact of this yourself.
However, I imagine that this is simply an average consumption based upon the whole building (we are just one unit). So may not reflect true usage.
Our other impact will be heating (gas boiler) and travel (mostly train journeys)
Perhaps we could estimate CO2 imact of our website (server energy / useri browsing / site maintenance and development ) / versus maintaining a physical gallery space (heat / lights / installation activity / travel costs to visit)
Anyone up for this?
