Seiko Mikami - ‘Desire of Codes’, 2007After receiving such a positive response from the public, the captivating artwork Desire of Codes  will now be at Barrow's Dock Museum until the 17th November 2007.

Part of the VELOCITY festival, this interactive installation features sixty wall-mounted robotic devices that track the movements of the gallery visitor, and the desire lines they walk, in controlled and precise unison using ultrasonic and infra red sensors.

In an accelerated information-oriented society, our consumer habits, our criminal history, our health, our image captured by CCTV cameras, even the friends we keep - all are determined, stored or catalogued using digital codes such as barcodes and cookies. The encoding of individual information occurs immediately, almost as fast it could be said as the satisfaction of a desire.

In ‘Desire of Codes’ the artist is interested in how this data might become assimilated with the unique genetic fingerprint of our own DNA. What if these sequences of stripes were combined with the very codes that track our lives? It suggests a future where we may question if the ‘real body is you’ or if ‘your data is true’.

If these assimilated codes mimic desire, are these our desires too?  The robotic devices of the installation reveal the tension between the human body and our bodies of data.
