Vigilance - Rich White

Vigilance is a site specific installation made from reclaimed and found materials. Its form is derived from the curved bow of the Vigilant, a Vanguard class nuclear submarine built in Barrow-in-Furness. In the work a Vigilant appears to have been dropped onto the building however instead of demolishing it, the building has adjusted itself to accommodate the shape of the hull. The evidence of this can be viewed through the windows of the vacant shop units. This work has been produced as part of FRED 2007
Venue: Unit X & Y, The Mall, Duke Street, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 1HL
FREE ADMISSION
The artist has an online platform www.counterwork.co.uk/net.weight/ where he posts his thinking about net-based art in a sculptural context. This project began when he started thinking about the measurement phrase 'net weight'. This led to thinking what, if at all, was the weight of the internet? Not all the equipment, hardware, wires and cables, but the weight of the information. Could there be a way of measuring the mass of the fundamental particles that carry the data? His message board is for ideas about object-based works but also spatial ideas relating to the sculptural behaviour of processes and information systems.
