Football 2.0

In the brave new world of the internet, a website has now taken over a football club. Ebbfleet match

Following an ownership structure that probably would not have been envisaged without both the ease of function and the culture of the internet, 20,000 MyFootballClub members have each paid £35 to provide a £700,000 takeover pot and they will all own an equal share in Kent club Ebbsfleet United.

Members will have a vote on transfers as well as player selection and all major decisions.

Even more fascinating and encouraging than this innovative ownership structure - which represents a shot in the arm for Ebbsfleet's finances - has been the press reaction, which has correctly realised the potential in this radical progression:

"Attendences should shoot up as members turn up to follow a team that is, literally, theirs." - The Times

"Enthusiasm for a soccer team owened and managed by the fans can be seen as something of a backlash against mega-owners who are buying into sport as an investment, not a passion" - Yahoo! News

"A new era for international sport could be close..." ESPN

It begs the question what other social structures and organisation could benefit from such a grassroots democratic involvement?

I guess a sense of owernship = individual willingness to invest more time and resources = greater power to the organisation as a whole.
