Location Aware Software
Location-Based WiFi Services ?
This could be an interesting development - seems to be targetted at consumers! But presumably developers can add to the services on offer? See the developers page. Client software development is open sourcei.
This is what they are claiming:
Herecast provides location-based services on a WiFi device. At its simplest level, it can tell you where you are. More advanced services can use your location to enhance information lookups, publish presence information, and create unique games -- all while preserving privacy.
Not me gov, I wasn't there when it didn't happen
Viacom are going after YouTube/Google . It had to happen, and that large copyright lawsuits would be aimed at YouTube was one of the main predictions when it was bought by Google. After all, what was the point of suing YouTube when it was a couple guys with a mountain of debt. It will be interesting to see how this pans out, especially for anyone wanting to runi a 'useri generated content' site. Of course one of the main contentions in the case of YouTube is that it's very business model (assuming it has one) is based on the attraction of finding copyrighted material on there. In their defence Google claim the Safe Harbor (sic) clause whereby ISPs and the like cannot be expected to monitor what every user is up to. In contrast there is the argument is that in many cases the copyright owners benefit from the infringements via free publicity.

Web 2.0, Game 3.0, Marketing 4.0
So, Sony have announced they are going to play catch up to Second Life with their new 3D offering for Playstation 3 users, Home:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6429039.stm
'[A Sony spoksman] described Home as a 3D social networkingi service.'
However in the very next para the BBC points out:
'Dynamic advertising - including high definition video - can be pushed into the 3D universe.' which of course is the point of the thing. Sony gleefully tell us that they are "hoping companies outside of gaming will want their own spaces inside Home.
Exit 'Utopia'. enter realism?
"So we can chuck away all the nonsense about "democratization of knowledge", and "new forms of production" , and similar such drivel offered by the eggheads of Web 2.0 - and conclude that after millions of man hours effort, human volunteers can't do a much better job than the algorithms, either.
...
We're really back to square one.
Maybe this time, we can forget about such utopian dreams as an "information revolution", and get some real information professionals involved, such as librarians and editors, to earn their keep. Maybe we can rid ourselves of the illusion that "everyone talking at once" will generate some kind of wisdom, when all Google and WIkipedia have demonstrated is that it's a giant Tower of Babel. Everyone's talking alright, but there's nothing worth listening to."
