A system of math used by, for example, online search engines to formulate more complex search terms. A search engine will use operators like AND, NOT and OR to sort through data to find results which most accurately match a search. For instance, if you enter a search for “x AND y NOT z” you will be provided with results which contain both x and y but exclude z. The system takes its name from English mathematician George Boole who is famed for introducing this system of logic in 1847.
