The term digitali is used in a wide range of ways, but fundamentally it is about representing information as a series of separate or discrete numbers. An example would be to look at how a sound is represented. When a sound is produced, for example by a musical instrument, it travels through the air as a continuous wave. This sound might be captured by a microphone and converted by an 'analogue to digital converter'. In this process the amplitude (loudness) of each frequency that makes up the sound is measured many times a second and these measurements are stored as discrete numbers. From this digital data a close approximation of the original sound can be recreated. This reverse process is what is going on when listening to music on an mp3 player, or from a CD.
