ASCII

ASCIIii (American Standard Codei for Information Interchange), pronounced [ˈæski], is a character encoding representing the English alphabet. Computers, which of course work in binary code made up of 11111s and 000000s need a standard protocoli for agreeing which combination of 111s and 0000s represent which letters. If they didn't agree, you wouldn't even be able to read this without it potentially turning to goobledegook!

ASCII codes can represent text in computers, mobile phone, typewriters or any devices or technologies that work with text. Indeed, ascii art - or at least making pictures out of text characters - can be traced back to ancient Egypt.
