Project start date: September, 2009

Abandon Normal Devices (AND) is a new festival that welcomes audiences to experience the best in new cinema and media art in a celebration that spills from screens and galleries into the landscape and imaginations of the North West. AND exists to create a space where artists and filmmakers can offer striking new perspectives, and visitors can enjoy, discuss and interact with ideas, in a festival that questions the normal and champions a different approach.

Abandon Normal Devices is driven by a new collaborative partnership between three of the UK’s leading institutions dealing with art and digital culture. folly have joined forces with FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) in Liverpool and Cornerhouse in Manchester to collaborate on the exciting task of imagining a new festival from scratch.

The festival will take place in Liverpool and Manchester on alternate years, with an extended programme in Cumbria, Lancashire and Cheshire. Expect an eclectic array of screenings, installations, online projects, public realm interventions, workshops and live events, with a distinctive emphasis on ideas and discussion.

The debut AND festival takes place in Liverpool 23-27 September 2009 and then in April 2010 AND will abandon the city and heads for the hills to visit a series of remote and rural locations in Cumbria, Lancashire and online presented by folly.

AND will play host to a series of mind blowing events for the public and opportunities for inspiration and critical debate for artists. AND will question evolution and imagine how art and technology might alter our future way of life.

AND will offer the public alternative views of the future through three new major projects located in the stunning Lake District, the magnificent Pennines and online.
