ArtCast

Project duration: October, 2006 to April, 2009

ArtCast was folly's platform for public access to new and innovative art, exploring the creative potential of the podcasting medium.

This platform was a place especially for the podcasting of art itself, acting a little like a virtual gallery space, as an alternative to the many interviews, reports and documentaries which are podcasted by other arts organisations and entertainment web sites.

Released at intervals throughout the year, six podcast series were made available to stream or download between 2006 and 2009.

The artistic themes underpinning each of the podcasts have been varied, often relating to events in the real world, connecting our audiences’ physical and virtual experiences, while we have also experimented with different avenues to source and create the content.

Spring 2009, in association with moves09.

For this series we selected five of the best new video works made by students based in England's Northwest, in response to the theme of moves09 - “Beyond Movement... What's Your Story?” moves is the largest exhibition platform in the UK for experimental short film and new media with a unique focus on movement on screen.

Winter 2008, in association with Art Locates Me.

This series showcases a wide range of film and video work created by young people through Art Locates Me - a digital art and media project producing and distributing work made by young people from Cumbria.

Spring 2008, in association with moves08.

For this series folly worked with moves to select sound and video art from an international open call for submissions, relating to the moves08 festival theme of “the interaction of choreographed movement and sound”.

Autumn 2007, part of the VELOCITY festival of Digital Culture.

folly invited Sonic Arts Network to join us in the selection of podcasts from an international open call. Chosen to complement the VELOCITY festival experience, These audio podcasts include submissions from artists working with sound, experimental musicians and composers, writers and performance artists, both locally and from across the world.

OWN [SOUND] ART

In partnership with SoundNetwork, in early 2007 folly released a series of specially commissioned podcasts that explored the possibilities of the medium for artists and the distribution of their work in sound. The series not only explored the practical delivery of sound art on the internet, but also the very nature of communication through broadcasting.

Square Cuts

As part of f.city in 2006, folly released this series of digital anthologies from Flax Books, the publishing imprint of Litfest. This spoken-word series features extracts of short fictions from writers across Lancashire and Cumbria, and include tales of ghosts, guns and Walt Disney, in an audio experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
