AND Festival presents Rule of Thirds

31st October 2009, Ulverston Cumbria

As part of the Abandon Normal Devices (AND) festival, folly is working in partnership with We Make Media to develop North, a programme of events and activities aimed at inspiring creative professionals to do things differently.

Rule of Thirds is the very first North event to hit Cumbria in the lead up to the AND festival taking place in Easter 2010. Rule of Thirds is a one day gathering of creative thinkers, meeting to discuss the impact of digital culture on creative workflow, and to explore the exciting, developing opportunities for how we create, communicate and collaborate.

Throughout the day we'll be exploring a challenging array of subjects through speaker presentations, open debate and group exploration. We’re bringing together creative people from a range of disciplines to share and learn, with an emphasis on exploring innovative approaches, creative workflows and new forms of collaboration.

We have six excellent speakers lined up to present on a diverse range of inspiring and challenging subjects: such as live performance, 3D web technology, digital engagement and play. In true AND style Rule of Thirds will break from convention, taking a unique approach to our speaker sessions. We have designed the format to allow attendees to get really engaged with the ideas being presented - not just to sit, listen and learn, but also to question, probe and explore. The whole day is about gathering and sharing knowledge, and to get inspired by new ways of doing things.

Rule of Thirds invites you to abandon the city and your normal methods of working and join us in South Cumbria to learn, explore and debate. Lanternhouse International in Ulverston will provide the perfect space to inspire creative conversations and ideas. Refreshments will be on tap throughout the day and we'll even be providing lunch - all you need to do is bring yourself and your ideas.

The day-long event (9.00 am - 4.30 pm) is completely FREE. Bookings can be made online:

AND is a new festival presented by folly, FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) and Cornerhouse that welcomes audiences to experience the best in new cinema and media art in a celebration that spills from screens and galleries into the landscape and imaginations of the North West.

The festival will take place in Liverpool and Manchester on alternate years, with an extended programme in Cumbria, Lancashire and Cheshire. Expect an eclectic array of screenings, installations, online projects, public realm interventions, workshops and live events, with a distinctive emphasis on ideas and discussion.

AND has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic Games and forms part of WE PLAY, the Northwest cultural legacy project led by the Arts Council Northwest on behalf of new regional partnerships.
