Call for disabled artists (UK-based)

R&D residency in Ulverston Cumbria hosted by Prism Arts, Lanternhouse and Folly.

A unique opportunity for a disabled artist to further their own practice and develop a proposal for future work with the host organisations.

The residency will provide an ideal platform for an artist to work up commission ideas for the Cultural Olympiad Unlimited programme, supported by three high profile arts organisations working in Cumbria, and their networks of artists, audiences and cultural partners in the North West.

This opportunity is open to UK artists developing work across a range of art-forms, however we particularly welcome artists who are interested working in a participative fashion to explore new technologies and future ways of life.

The chosen artist will be expected to:

• engage/collaborate with the newly formed Cumbrian Disabled Artists Network
• contribute to Lanternhouse's participative programme during their residency
• present proposals at the end of the residency

Accommodation for 2-3 weeks at Lanternhouse, Ulverston, and a stipend of £300 is available to the chosen artist. We expect the residency to take place in January 2011.

Prism Arts

Prism Arts exists to support and enable excluded groups in Cumbria to realise their creative potential and celebrate their experience through active participation in and exploration of the arts.

Since its inception in 1987, Prism Arts has initiated hundreds of projects throughout Cumbria working with a wide range of groups including disabled people, older people and those with mental-health difficulties.

Lanternhouse

Lanternhouse is an arts company in Ulverston on the edge of Cumbria’s Lake District. It is a place where artists, curators and creative thinkers come to work on new ideas or produce new work through our Residencies, Commissions and Open Door programming strands.

Lanternhouse is the catalyst for artists, participants and audience to debate, experience and participate in contemporary art and culture. It is a place where ideas, art forms and people collide to create a special energy and atmosphere.

For our Residency programme, we invite a diverse range of artists, curators and creative thinkers to live at Lanternhouse to research and develop new work. They have access to a range of facilities: office space, project rooms, workshop, barn, music room and garden studio.

Folly

Folly is a leading digital arts agency working across England’s Northwest. Folly presents an active artistic programme that provides creative interaction and collaboration between artists and the wider public using technology. Folly commissions, exhibits, promotes and supports creative work and innovation with a strong emphasis on the use of online media, networked systems and integrated technologies.

Folly has a 20 year history of delivering challenging participatory programmes exploring the creative implications of technology. Folly has an international reputation for high quality innovative practices and strong links with creative and technological communities, networks and specialists, both locally/regionally and on an international scale.

Folly is one of three lead partners in the Abandon Normal Devices Festival. AND is a regional festival taking place across the Northwest and is a catalyst for production and experimentation at the intersection of Digital Culture and New Cinema. AND invites us to consider what are our normal devices? Why and how might we abandon them? AND is driven by a unique collaborative partnership between three of the UK’s leading organisations in the exploration of art and digital culture; Cornerhouse, FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) and folly. The festival forms part of WE PLAY, the Northwest cultural legacy programme for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
