folly Enjoys Success at Launch of AND Festival

1 – 7 October, Manchester

folly went en masse to Manchester to experience the opening night of AND festival in Manchester.

Lawrence Malstaf opened the night with his unique, claustrophobic 20 minute installment of Shrink. Audience reception ranged from bewilderment to awe, to confusion. Whatever the perception from those in the audience, the piece was indeed thought-provoking.

During the day, Recorders was featured in the Manchester Art Gallery, showcasing the works of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. He looks at the misuse of surveillance and biometric technology to create platforms for participation, with a completely playful and ominous undertone to the set up.

Recorders will be available to visit all week.

A one-off impressive viewing of Movie Protocol by Harold Smykla was exhibited at Cornerhouse, where the artist drew a film, scene-by-scene documenting Nick Roeg's Significance in its' entirety. An impressive yet obviously tedious task for just one man!

The thought-provoking yet surprisingly simplistic short film of Narrative, was shown at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester last Sunday. The ideas of identity and cultural differences were explored through the film as well as in the thoroughly engaging debate thereafter.

Today's interesting feature is that of the entirely enigmatic One Button Challenge at the Cornerhouse and FabLab (11.00-17.00). Participants are dared to design and build a device with a single input button. This is of course a challenge in a world filled with multi-functionality, motion-detection controllers and touch screens.
